Planned trip to Belfast May 2024 

We are proposing to organise a three-night visit to Belfast next year.

Belfast is the home of Belfast Natural History and Philosophical Society founded in 1821 with whom we will arrange a get together while we are there.

The city came second after York in a Which? survey of the best large cities in the UK for a short break. It has many attractions and is a good base to explore other parts of Northern Ireland.

These are the main features.

  • Three nights with breakfast at the historic Harrison hotel (theharrisonbelfast.co.uk) in the centre of Belfast. We will have exclusive use of this magnificent town house. The Harrison is
  • Reception and dinner with the Belfast Natural History & Philosophical Society: see belfastsociety.org.
  • Visits to Hillsborough Castle and Gardens including a private conducted tour of the State Rooms.  The castle has acted as a political retreat and hosted a number of important negotiations as part of the Peace Process.
  • Armagh Observatory and Planetarium – conducted tour by the Director, Professor Michael Burton followed by a visit to the Georgian town of Armagh where we will have dinner before returning to Belfast.
  • Visit to the Titanic Experience. Located beside the Titanic Slipways, the Harland and Wolff Drawing Offices and the Hamilton Graving Dock where the Titanic was designed, built, and launched, Titanic Belfast tells the story of Titanic from her conception, through her construction and launch, to her maiden voyage and subsequent place in history.
  • A private guided tour of the Giant’s Causeway and visitor centre – A UNESCO World Heritage site with over 40,000 basalt columns, formed some 60 million years ago, are testament to a major stage in the earth’s development.
  • Travel in Northern Ireland by private coach.
  • Numbers limited to 25 persons.
  • Proposed dates – Monday 20th to Thursday 23rd May 2024

The price is expected to be around £750 per member, £700 for members sharing a room. 

Guests of members can express an interest in joining the trip. The cost for guests would be an additional £30 (£25 for seniors) which would include Society membership for one year.
